Dutch-American Master at Mystic’s Historic Festival
The 67th Mystic Outdoor Art Festival showcases exceptional talent this August 9-10. This celebrated weekend highlights artistic excellence throughout historic downtown Mystic. As the oldest festival of its kind in the Northeast, it attracts distinguished artists. One remarkable painter, Peter Stolvoort, deserves special attention at Booth H52.

Peter Stolvoort – Booth H52
Peter Stolvoort brings decades of artistic experience to this year’s festival celebration. Born in the Netherlands, he immigrated to America aboard the SS Maasdam at age nine. His childhood transatlantic crossing profoundly influences his acclaimed Flow painting series.
Stolvoort’s home and studio occupy historic Bucks County near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Peace Valley Park and Lake Galena across the road provide endless inspiration. His Dutch heritage maintains a deep love for nature’s vibrant colors.
The artist began painting at an early age using materials his father brought home. His father worked as a faux painter in the Netherlands. These early experiences shaped Stolvoort’s lifelong passion for artistic expression.
Artistic Education and Career
Stolvoort graduated from the Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia studying painting, printmaking, and design. He also studied painting at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His formal training provides a strong foundation for contemporary artistic expression.
After three decades as an award-winning designer of commercial and media products, Stolvoort returned to painting. His design background influences his compositional approach and color theory understanding. This unique blend creates sophisticated contemporary artwork.
His Flow series captures changing light and water currents from travels and home. These powerful works begin with concept layouts established in hidden under-paintings. All colors are planned and premixed to establish cohesive palettes.
Innovative Technique and Vision
Stolvoort creates his Flow paintings using copious amounts of fluid acrylics directly poured or applied. Custom-cut brushes help create dynamic currents of color throughout each composition. His technique produces movement that captures oceanic memories and emotions.
He works primarily with fluid acrylic paints on extra heavy duck canvas. Paintings flow over edges in contemporary style requiring no traditional framing. This approach creates immersive viewing experiences for contemporary art enthusiasts.
His artistic inspiration draws from Jackson Pollock and Mark Tobey influences significantly. The fluidity of acrylic paint allows his pieces to flutter with remarkable movement. Each painting captures the essence of water and natural flow.
Festival Experience at Booth H52
The Mystic Outdoor Art Festival provides an ideal venue for Stolvoort’s oceanic-themed artwork. His Flow series perfectly complements the festival’s coastal Connecticut setting. Historic Mystic’s maritime heritage resonates with his transatlantic immigration memories.
Visitors can meet this accomplished artist and discuss his unique pouring techniques. Original Flow paintings and other series will be available for purchase. His booth promises engaging conversations about Dutch heritage and American artistic development.
Saturday runs from 10am to 6pm; Sunday offers 10am-5pm viewing opportunities. Peter Stolvoort at Booth H52 represents exceptional artistic innovation and cultural heritage fusion.
