Why We Love It Today

There is a specific kind of magic that happens in Mystic during early February. As the afternoon sun dips low over the Bascule Bridge, the village lights reflect off the icy river, creating a scene straight out of a storybook. It’s the perfect time to grab a hot latte from a local shop, wander the quiet shipyard at the Seaport, and appreciate the resilient, seafaring spirit that has defined this community for centuries.
Looking Ahead
We are already counting down to the America 250 celebrations this summer, including the blockbuster opening of Brickwrecks: Sunken Ships in LEGO® Bricks at the Seaport this March. Speaking of high stakes, Valentine’s Day is exactly one week away—if you haven’t secured your tasting menu reservations at The Shipwright’s Daughter or Rocks 21, now is the time to call!
Don’t let the tide leave you behind! Set your compass back here every morning for your daily dose of Mystic magic.
Weather Notice
Based on the policies of the organizations hosting these events and standard practices in Greater Mystic, here is the status of the events given the current snowfall:
Likely Proceeding (Indoor Events)
Most indoor attractions in Mystic are designed to remain open during winter weather and are often marketed as “perfect rainy/snowy day” activities.
- Mermaids at Mystic Aquarium (Feb 7): This is an indoor event at the reef tank. The Aquarium rarely closes for moderate snow (3″) and typically remains open as a premier indoor winter destination.
- Rope-Making Demo at Mystic Seaport Museum (Feb 7): Mystic Seaport Museum generally holds events “rain or shine” and does not cancel for inclement weather unless road conditions become dangerous. Since the museum focuses on indoor exhibits during the winter, this demo is expected to proceed.
- Owl Meet & Greet at Mountain Hollow (Feb 7): This event takes place inside The Velvet Mill in Stonington. Indoor events at the Mill typically continue as scheduled during snow unless the facility itself closes.
At Risk of Cancellation (Outdoor Events)
- Peace Sanctuary Hike (Sunday, Feb 8): Outdoor guided hikes at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center are the most susceptible to weather-related cancellations for safety. While the center has a policy to refund if they cancel, you should check their website or social media for a specific “snow day” update.
How to Confirm

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and local organizations use specific protocols for weather updates:
- Check Social Media: Updates for community events are primarily posted to the organizations’ Facebook and Instagram pages.
- Official Websites: The Chamber of Commerce and Mystic Seaport typically post a notice on their homepage if “dangerous road conditions” force a total closure.
- Call Ahead: For smaller venues like Mountain Hollow or local restaurants (Angie’s Pizza), a quick phone call is recommended, as individual business owners may adjust hours based on staff travel safety.
